Welcome everyone to the latest edition of the LSU Tigers position previews! This week, we look at the position of tight end.
With Foster Moreau coming back for his senior season and some notable names eligible to play, the tight ends look to remain a big part of the offense.
Without further ado, let’s get into the preview!
Departing Players:
The Tigers still have everything in place when it comes to the tight end position last year with no departures.
Returning Players:
With no departures from last season, it’s clear that there’s a lot of talent coming back and the one that is getting talked about a lot is definitely Foster Moreau. The senior had 24 receptions for 278 yards and three touchdowns last year and is expected to carry that momentum into his senior season.
One player that seemed to be on the rise as we got closer to fall camp was Jamal Pettigrew, but it was reported during SEC Media Days that the sophomore is going to be out for the season due to an ACL injury. Losing him will undoubtedly hurt, but you do have someone like senior Jacory Washington that you could use more along the lines of a run blocker.
The Other Guys:
If we’re talking about the other guys in the tight end room, it’s safe to say that the name on everyone’s mind is Thaddeus Moss. Moss, coming from NC State, had to sit out last year due to NCAA Transfer rules and will be one of the Tigers that many fans will have their eyes on because of the fact that he’s the son of great wide receiver Randy Moss. It’s going to be an uphill climb for him because of the expectations that LSU fans have of him, but he has a legitimate chance to get some serious playing time.
Meanwhile, there are two players that likely won’t see the field in 2018 and that’s Zach Sheffer and Aaron Moffitt. If I were to pick one that had a better shot at getting some snaps, I’d probably go more along the lines with Moffitt largely because of his size. When you have a tight end listed at 6’2”, 266 pounds, that’s another player that you could use as a run blocker much like Washington will likely be used this season.
Overall Thoughts:
Even without a player like Pettigrew that’s out for the season, this tight ends group is pretty good with Foster Moreau and Thaddeus Moss being the big dogs headed into fall camp.
