2016 is being labeled the year of celebrity deaths and rightfully so. It felt like breaking news on a very famous person’s death came out on a weekly basis. The Cubs did win the World Series this yearn though. Maybe the billy goat’s curse was transferred to Hollywood. Speaking of Hollywood, Los Angeles was given a new football team. Nobody seemed to notice football was being played in L.A. but it did, there is enough video evidence to confirm the call.
Some of my favorite things in the year 2016 was all the craziness that is LSU sports. LSU is a school that does not win as much as they entertain and steal the show in every facet of their athletic department. Call LSU sports the Dolph Ziggler of college sports: always entertaining, but you’d never really want to bet on them. From the Rally Possum to the Coach Oeaux, LSU sports in 2016 gave me memories I will cherish forever. Do not forget, Ben Simmons was in Baton Rouge in 2016 too! Remember eat, sleep, double double, repeat? I know you do! You’re just trying to forget it and I do not blame you.
The Ragin’ Cajuns didn’t do much winning in 2016 but they did keep us busy here with Cajundome renovations, baseball field confusion, and locker room tickle butt during election week! Let’s also pay homage to the man who loves the Cajuns more than anyone I know and fearlessly covered them all year long and will continue to do so; my 2016 journalist of the year Mr. David Schultz!
2016 was a year for fighting too! The UFC sold for $4 billion while Conor McGregor provided the most entertaining promo material since The Rock. Ronda Rousey was on hiatus but the sport was not without inspiring females who displayed the fighting spirit. Miesha Tate’s epic late scramble to down the champ Holly Holm is something millions of impressionable little girls will not soon forget. Brock Lesnar returned to the Octagon to crush Mark Hunt in a fit of ‘roid rage only to lose to Goldberg a few months later in a minute and 26 seconds. That was possibly the most jaw dropping “oh my god” moment of the year.
All of these moments I can think of plus the other ones I haven’t mentioned like “LeBlock” and Sidney Crosby claiming his thrown once again! I could go on and on with more stuff that kept us all entertained and talking, but I will finish by saying 2016, to me, will forever be remembered as the year the radio was saved when 103.7 The Game gave the world the gift of The Alan Michael Show. Drink it man!
