The spring game for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns seems to have answered a lot of questions that head coach Mark Hudspeth had heading into spring practice.
The biggest question was undoubtedly the position of quarterback. That may have been answered on Saturday afternoon as he announced who would be the starting QB heading into fall camp.
“Right now, it’s Jordan’s job heading into the fall. He’s earned it.” Hudspeth said of Jordan Davis, who went 11-14 for 174 yards and a score in one half of action. The second half of the spring game was a flag football game featuring alumnus.
“This is his team this summer during OTAs and workouts.” Hudspeth said, “The team’s got a lot of confidence in him, the wideouts and himself are getting a lot of continuity working together. Just real proud of his attitude. This will be a great opportunity for him.”
Last year’s game for Davis was less than ideal and he says that he’s improved since then. “I’ve come a far way. Coach Hall had a plan for me excited to have the opportunity to play under him and Hud. I’m really thankful for the opportunity.”
While Davis is the starter in fall camp, he will be having some tough competition with Andre Nunez and Dion Ray improving throughout the spring as well.
“I do feel like the other two guys are very capable.” Hudspeth said, “I came into the spring with a little bit of a question mark about the quarterback position. I came out of it with three really good ones.”
One of the biggest reasons why the quarterback play has improved is because of new offensive coordinator Will Hall. Davis said after the game that Hall’s offense is “Able to highlight a lot of players. We have a lot of great athletes on the outside perimeter as well as in the box. It’s able to give me the opportunity to make decisions and get them the ball and let them make plays for this offense.”
The Cajuns will start the 2017 season off at Cajun Field when they take on Southeastern Louisiana on September 2nd.
