Things to Watch Out for During LSU’s Spring Game

It’s a new era for LSU football. There’s a new head coach and offensive coordinator for the Tigers and that could lead to some big things in 2017.

With all the new toys that the Tigers have amongst the coaching staff, there are several things you want to keep an eye on.

Will There Be a New Look Offensively?

One of the first things that new head coach Ed Orgeron said when he became the interim head coach was that he was going to “flip the script”. This seemed to be true as Orgeron took over as the Tigers put up one of the best offensive performances in recent memory against Mizzou.

While the rest of the season continued to show improvement offensively, the biggest question many fans have is: how the offense will look with new offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Odds are we won’t see anything that would blow your mind or make several SEC coaches eyebrows raise when they’re looking at film.

Even if you don’t see anything entirely different, the fans really shouldn’t be discouraged since it is the spring game. Odds are you’ll see glimpses of something different, but it’s nothing really to write home about.

Can Danny Etling Be Consistent?

Danny Etling has shown that he can be a good quarterback after taking over for Brandon Harris back in week two. As of this writing, the starting quarterback job is his to lose and it’s expected that he could be when the Tiger take on BYU.

The biggest thing I want to see from him is consistency. Just show up, don’t lay an egg, and most importantly don’t get injured. Outside of the Alabama game, Etling looked pretty good. If he can do as much you would expect from a quarterback in what is basically a glorified scrimmage, then it puts some of the Tiger fans worries to rest.

What About the Kicking?

The kicking game seems to have a few questions, namely who will be kicking the field goals in 2017. Based off of the current roster, you have freshman Connor Culp and Jack Gonsoulin as the front runners and Cameron Gamble expected to be the one handling kickoffs. While the position of kicker isn’t necessarily the sexiest position on the field, but when looking at the Tigers deficiencies this seems to be their bugaboo without having a Colby Delahoussaye on the squad like they did after Trent Domingue transferred out.

That’s got to be one of the more important position battles from my point of view and if that’s becomes a little more clear, LSU could be doing alright heading into fall camp.
