It’s not often that the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns are in the conversation when it comes to the Golden Spikes Award. They’re mentioned early on in the watch lists, but there has never been someone named to the list of semifinalists for the top amateur baseball player in the United States.
Gunner Leger is now the first player in the program’s history to be named a semifinalist alongside some in-state players like LSU’s Greg Deichmann and Louisiana Tech’s Nate Harris. The junior lefty posted a 10-2 record in 15 starts with a stellar 1.97 ERA.
Cajuns head coach Tony Robichaux said that this is “a tremendous honor for Gunner, our program and our University. It’s good to see baseball pay someone back for their hard work and effort.”
The announcement of the finalists will be on June 14th and voting will be open until June 9th. You can help vote for Leger online through GoldenSpikesAward.com.
