The Fave 5: Take My Word For It

5. Danny Etling
After not being able to throw all offseason because of back surgery, Danny Etling was finally able to throw for the first time in live action since the LSU Spring Game during LSU’s scrimmage this weekend. It took six weeks of rehab before he could sling the ball for Coach O and Matt Canada, but when he finally did, Etling apparently looked better than ever. His receivers say Etling’s ball has more zip and Coach O said Etling went 5-11 with two touchdowns. Not bad for a guy who hasn’t been able to throw an entire summer before the biggest season of his life.

4. Frank Herron
LSU’s defensive line is fortunate to have highly touted youngsters learning under some wily veterans who will show them the ways of hard work and dedication. Frank Herron is one of those vets and after recently becoming the first member of his family to graduate college, Herron went right into teaching as he put on a clinic at LSU’s scrimmage racking up 4 tackles and 2 sacks. Guys like Rashard Lawrence and Edwin Alexander are going to be better for having played with Frank Herron.

3. Clyde Edwards-Helaire
LSU had Derrius Guice waiting in the wings while the world drooled over Leonard Fournette. As teams prepared to get run over and bulked up to face LSU, Guice was able to change pace and eventually fill in full-time for LF7. This year it looked like LSU was going to have to hope Guice stayed healthy because unlike Fournette, Derrius Guice did not have another badass running back underneath him on the depth chart. That was until LSU’s preseason scrimmage and freshman Clyde Edwards-Helaire came along. With 19 yards on 6 carries, Edwards-Helaire was called “dominant” and “the surprise of camp” by Coach O.

2. K’Lavon Chaisson
In what was not a surprise at all, LSU’s prized pass rusher in this year’s class showed up huge in the preseason scrimmage as he turned the Tigers’ offensive line into his personal chew toy, ripping them apart for 3 tackles for loss, a sack, and about 4 quarterback hurries. With Arden Key nursing an injury, the reps Chaisson gets are extremely valuable which is what he might end up being immediately when LSU is looking for someone to complement Key’s dominance this season.

1. Coach O Scrimmage Stats
Nothing is better than Coach O reports. It is the best part of his job. He coaches his players, he meets with the team, they run a scrimmage, and then having closed everything to the outside world, Coach O gives us all a report on how everything went. Among his many talents, describing how his team looked might be what Coach O does best.
