It’s not often that a team is able to come back down eight runs, especially when you allow that many runs in the first inning. That’s how it went down for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (6-9) on Sunday afternoon and a lot of the scoring can be attributed to a pair of errors.
“It turned because of errors.” Tony Robichaux said of the 11-5 loss, “You’ve got to get outs especially when you have a true freshman on the mound in a very difficult position filling in for Hogan Harris. You’ve got to be able to play defense behind him.”
After three straight singles to start the ballgame, things started to unravel with Dylan Hardy scoring off of a throwing error from Kennon Fontenot. Carter Perkins made it 5-0 later in the inning with a three-run double out to left center.
Hunter Brittain busted things open after a sac bunt with a no-doubter out to left field to end Austin Perrin’s rough day. Brett Williams came in to the ballgame and was able to hold down the fort for five and two-thirds innings, not allowing a hit.
“He came in, gave us every opportunity and came close to 80 pitches which is a lot for him because he’s a true freshman.” Robichaux said of Williams, “We let him go until he had enough and he did a great job for us.”
Hunter Kasuls got the Cajuns on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot out to right field. Kasuls started to get them back into the ballgame in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Gavin Bourgeois to make it 8-2.
The Cajuns were able to cut the deficit in half later in the inning with an RBI double to right field from Kennon Fontenot and a sac fly from Jonathan Windham. However, Will Luft put the game out of reach in the eighth when he blasted one opposite field, making it 10-4.
Austin Perrin dropped to 0-4 on the season allowing three earned runs off of five hits and walked one in a third of an inning.
The Cajuns will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to New Orleans to take on the Tulane Green Wave (7-8) with first pitch set for 6:30 pm.
