Louisiana Crawls Back Late, Comes Up Short in Loss to Troy

Posted by clintdomingue on March 24, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (9-13, 1-4 Sun Belt) had a rough go of things on Saturday afternoon with the Troy Trojans (16-7, 3-2 Sun Belt) racking up five of their eight runs in the top of third. The Cajuns crawled back, but it was too little too late for them as they lost 8-5.

How It Happened

The Trojans got off to a great start in the top of the second with an RBI double from Chase Smartt, followed by an RBI single from Brody Binder.

Things really got out of hand in the top of the third with a five-run inning highlighted by a two-run single up the middle from Smartt to end Jack Burk’s day.

The Cajuns got on the board in the top of the fifth when Jonathan Windham hit an RBI single through the right side. They kept it going with a pair of runs courtesy of another RBI single, this time from Gavin Bourgeois and a sac fly from Cantrelle that scored Windham, making it 7-3 at the end of the fifth. However, the Trojans responded with another run off of a wild pitch

The Cajuns did try and crawl back into the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double from Bourgeois followed by an RBI single from Cantrelle made it 8-5. However, they couldn’t finish the rally when Tyler Stover struck out swinging with the bases loaded in the ninth with two outs.

Jack Burk dropped to 2-4 on the year allowing six earned runs in two and a third of an inning of work.

Big Number: 8

Looking at the Troy Trojans performance this weekend inside Russo Park, no one’s having a weekend quite like Matt Sanders, who has reached base eight times out of ten appearances this weekend. He also was the spark for the Trojans offense in the third with a pair of singles.

Injury Update

During postgame, head coach Tony Robichaux gave an update on right fielder Daniel Lahare, who hyperextended his elbow on Friday night in what looked like a nasty injury. However, according to Robichaux he is “very sore” and hopes that they will be able to get him back for LSU. If he’s not ready by then, he should be ready to go when they travel over to Jonesboro to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves.

Next Up: Series Finale 1 PM

Pitchers: Colten Schmidt (1-0, 1.36 ERA) vs Max Newton (1-0, 0.56 ERA)
