LaFleur’s Walkoff Gives Louisiana Win Over Troy

Posted by clintdomingue on March 25, 2018 in Featured

It’s been a long time since the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (10-13, 2-4 Sun Belt) had been swept at home. There were some concerns early on in Sunday’s matchup in Troy (16-8, 3-3 Sun Belt), but they were able to get the win thanks to some walkoff magic from Zach LaFleur.

How It Happened

After a Matt Sanders leadoff double, Joey Denison got him across with a sac fly out to right field to make it 1-0 early on. However, the Cajuns were able to respond in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of errors by starter Max Newton tied things up. Later in the inning, Jonathan Windham gave the Cajuns the lead with a groundout to Sanders that allowed Hayden Cantrelle to reach home safely.

Sanders continued his great weekend in the top of the fifth when he tied things up with a double out to left field. However, Kennon Fontenot tied things up with a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Gavin Bourgeois.

Drew Frederic tied things up once again in the eighth with an RBI double to right center, but an RBI single that got through the right side by LaFleur was enough to give them a 4-3 win.

Logan Stoelke improved to 2-0 on the year, allowing one hit in two innings of relief.

Big Number: 2

This was LaFleur’s second career walkoff with his first happening back when he was at LSU-Eunice.

Play of the Game: Walkoff

Pretty open and shut case here with LaFleur hitting a single that went well into right field to give pinch runner Marco Ramos enough time to get to home plate.

Player of the Game: Colten Schmidt

While Schmidt didn’t get the win on Sunday, he still had a solid outing, striking out four and allowing three runs off of seven hits in seven innings of work. Also, he has a stellar season so far when you look at the stats.

Colten Schmidt has thrown 40 innings so far this season. Here's his K/BB looks.
