Louisiana Doubles Up Coastal Carolina in Series Opener

Posted by clintdomingue on May 4, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (27-20, 12-9 Sun Belt) weren’t messing around on Friday night, scoring in bunches ending up with a 12-6 victory in the series opener against Coastal Carolina (31-14, 17-4 Sun Belt).

How It Happened

The Cajuns wasted very little time getting on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first, all kickstarted by a one-out RBI single through the left side by Gavin Bourgeois. The Chanticleers responded in the top of the fourth with a solo shot by Zach Biermann.

Louisiana widened the gap in the fifth with a five-run inning punctuated by a three-run bomb out to left field by Kennon Fontenot to make it 8-1. Hunter Kasuls put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single through the left side, making it 10-1. Bourgeois and Kasuls slammed the door shut in the eighth with a pair of runs.

Colten Schmidt improved to 6-0 on the season, allowing one run off of four hits, walked one, and struck out nine in eight innings of work.

Big Number: 9

Another night, another great performance by Schmidt with nine strikeouts on the evening. He keeps having performances like that, this team is almost guaranteed a spot in the next round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Player of the Game: Kennon Fontenot

Kennon Fontenot went two-of-four on the evening and made them count with a total of four RBIs on the evening.

Next Up: Game Two; First Pitch at 6 PM
