Posted by clintdomingue on May 20, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

LSU’s only winner of the Heisman Trophy in Billy Cannon passed away at his home early on Sunday morning at the age of 80.

Cannon was one of the most versatile players in program history and had his jersey retired in 1959. In the three years that he was a Tiger, Cannon rushed for 1,867 yards o 359 carries and 24 touchdowns. He also racked up 311 receptions for 522 yards and two touchdowns. He was an all-purpose player and was named Back of the Decade in the 1950s and was also named the defensive back of the decade.

After leaving LSU, he went on to play professional football for 11 years, leading the Houston Oilers to the AFL Title in 1961 and 1962.

After the news of his passing, several former players took to social media to give their thoughts on the legendary player.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Cannon family. Dr. Cannon was a mentor to me in my days at LSU and he will truly be missed. Thanks for the memories and RIP #20.

An absolute legend. Billy Cannon was one of the greatest to ever put on a Tigers uniform. I always enjoyed my conversations with him and appreciated him taking the time to talk football with me. I’m beyond grateful to have met him. Rest In Peace #20. https://t.co/vBzElRy6fJ
