What We Learned From Week One of High School Football

Posted by clintdomingue on September 1, 2018 in Blogs, Football Night In Acadiana, High School Sports, Latest News

Week one for high school football is in the books and there’s a lot of things that we learned about teams around the Acadiana area.

#1: Acadiana Looks Vulnerable

The Matt McCullough era started off on a strong note last night with a narrow win over the Kaplan Pirates. It was a matchup that I immediately listed as a must-watch ballgame. You have the Wreckin’ Rams start the season with a Kaplan team that is coming off of one of their best years and they took them to the absolute limit. Dillan Monette was injured in the fourth quarter and had a solid ballgame and that could affect Acadiana’s offensive gameplan when they make a trip over to take on a Ruston team that upset Neville 41-7 on Thursday night.

#2: STM is Who We Thought They Were

Caleb Holstein was a beast last night and could have had four TD passes on the evening if not for a drop by Deion Senegal. While the Cougars offense was #AsExpected, they showed that they are solid defensively. Yes, they played Lafayette High a team that hasn’t won a regular season game since November of 2016 but winning 63-10 shows that this team has a chance to make it back to the Superdome in 2018. Yeah, I went there.

#3: Westgate May Not Be the Giant We Expected It to Be

The Tigers of Westgate seemed poised to be one of the better teams in the area with some of the talent on the team. You’ve got running back Tyreese Jackson along with highly-touted junior Kayshon Boutte and that seemed to be lethal combination. However, Catholic New Iberia had their number, coming away with a 48-21 win and that alone had me surprised at the end result.

#4: Lafayette Christian Academy Sets the Tone

When you play up in terms of classification, it could be an uphill climb depending on who you’re facing. Well, there’s no worries for the Knights of Lafayette Christian Academy as they simply dominated the Northside Vikings to open up the season. Looking forward to seeing how this team’s looks as the season progresses with Zachary Clement back from injury.
