LSU’s New Offense Shines in Opener Against Georgia Southern

-Baton Rouge When head coach Ed Orgeron said that they were coming out guns blazing against Georgia Southern (0-1) during his time with the media Thursday, this wasn’t what many expected to see from the LSU Tigers (1-0). It was all LSU from the opening drive and they didn’t really let up on the gas on the way to a 55-3 victory.

How It Happened:

LSU wasted little time getting on the board six-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Joe Burrow connecting with Ja’Marr Chase. After forcing a three-and-out, freshman Derek Stingley Jr. made his presence felt with a 37-yard punt return to give the Tigers excellent field position and Clyde-Edwards Helaire punched it in from one-yard out to take an early 14-0 lead.

LSU’s offense wasn’t satisfied and Burrow made it a 21-0 ballgame before the first quarter ended with a touchdown pass in the endzone to Stephen Sullivan.

Things continued to click for this new-look offense with Burrow finding Terrace Marshall in the endzone three times in the second quarter to put the game out of reach before the halftime show.

Burrow exited Saturday’s game early in the third quarter, but the offense didn’t miss a beat with Myles Brennan taking the snaps. The offensive strategy shifted more towards the run, but it was still effective with Lanard Fournette finding the endzone and Cade York nailing a pair of field goals from 39 and 48 yards out respectively.

Big Number: 5

The passing game was on full display for the Tigers with five touchdowns thrown by Burrow in the first half. That tied a program-record that was set by Zach Mettenberger back in 2013. If that doesn’t convince you that this is a new era of offense, nothing really will.

Player of the Game: Joe Burrow

The former Ohio State quarterback looked like he was in complete control of an offense that has all the necessary tools to win the big games with 278 yards and five touchdowns to open up the season.

Next Up: Saturday vs Texas; Kickoff at 6:30 pm
