Week Two High School Football Roundup

Posted by Louis Prejean on September 13, 2019 in High School Sports, Latest News

Week two of high school football in Acadiana is in the books.

Lafayette High showed signs of consistency, St. Thomas More ran away with their matchup thanks to their quarterback-wide receiver connection and Southside High is not a one-hit wonder.

Let’s start with the Carencro Golden Bears defeating New Iberia 48-13. Carencro bounced back from their 22-point loss to Acadiana High with a dominant performance. One highlight from this one was a scoop and score by the Golden Bears. Jacourey Castille scored on the 97-yard fumble recovery.

The Vermilion Parish Game of the Week was a runaway performance for the Kaplan Pirates. They held North Vermilion to just seven points as they won 32-7. The Pirates are now 2-0 on the season.

Lafayette High scored 66 point in their season-opener. Their offense didn’t see a considerable dropoff as they scored 38 points in their win over St. Martinville. The final result, 38-7 and the Mighty Lions move to 2-0.

STM jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, then led 28-17 and finished the game on a 28-0 run. The Cougars defeated the Barbe Buccaneers 56-17. Quarterback Calob Holstein and wide receiver Jack Bech led the way by connecting for four touchdowns.

The Comeaux High Spartans are now 1-1 after defeating the Cecilia Bulldogs 34-7. Spartan quarterback Eddie Flugence recorded 116 rushing yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns. Running back Sharod Kelly had 94 yards on nine carries, while Jalon Lewis ran 81 yards on six carries and a touchdown. The team totaled 347 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

And the Southside Sharks got their second straight win with a 32-22 victory over the Church point Bears. Southside can increase their winning streak to three in their matchup next week against Franklin High.

Other scores from the area:

The Erath Bobcats earned a week two win over the Loreauville Tigers, 34-20

Teurlings Catholic got the road victory against Archbishop Hannan 49-8

Rayne won a low-scoring affair against the Abbeville Wildcats 19-8

Lafayette Christian Academy won 51-6 over Northside High
