Some businesses will have to wait a little longer before opening their doors.
Governor John Bel Edwards announced today that the Stay-at-Home Order will be extended until May 15, 2020. According to his statement, Louisiana does meet the standards the White House has set needed to reopen. He says, in order for the infection rate to continue to slow, residents will need to remain home for a few more weeks.
Although, when looking at the data, the overall growth rate of hospitalizations and death from COVID-19 have appeared to decrease, that is not the case in all parts of the state. In Baton Rouge, the number of new cases continues to grow. For that reason, the state will have to monitor the pandemic before reopening the state’s economy.
There are a few changes to the stay-at-order for businesses. Malls are still to be closed to visitors but can offer curbside delivery service. Restaurants are now permitted to open up outside seating for customers but without tableside service. Employees are still required to wear a mask while at work. Bars, casinos, salons, and barbershops and all of the businesses ordered closed in the original order will still remain closed.
The CDC is strongly recommending that everyone wear a mask while in a public setting.
If the COVID-19 numbers continue to decrease in the next few weeks, Louisiana will be able to move onto Phase 1. Phase 1 will ease the restrictions set on places of worship, restaurants, and salons. Businesses are encouraged to begin formulating a plan to make sure social distancing guidelines will be met and that every employee will have a mask.
Governor Edwards is planning on making his next announcement on May 11.
