RAGIN’ CAJUNS GAMER: Doucet leads Louisiana to ninth consecutive win

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball team continues to win.

Louisiana hosted UT Arlington Monday afternoon and defeated the Mavericks 57-48 behind Ty Doucet’s game-high 21 points.

This was the ninth straight win for the Ragin’ Cajuns. They are now 10-5 overall for the season and 9-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.

How It Happened:

Ragin’ Cajuns forward Kimberly Burton started the contest with an offensive rebound and second chance layup to put the team up 2-0.

UT Arlington took their first lead of the game with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter. Shyia Smith’s layup gave the Mavericks a 7-6 lead.

Louisiana ended the quarter on a 10-0 run. Doucet hit a jumper with four seconds left in the first as the Ragin’ Cajuns took a 16-7 lead into the second frame.

The Mavericks responded with a 5-0 run to start the second. Back-to-back field goals from Destiny Mcafee and Doucet gave Louisiana a 20-12 lead with 3:16 left in the first half.

The scoring stopped until the 1:19 mark. UT Arlington’s Michaela Wright converted two free throws, but the Mavericks trailed 21-16 entering the halftime break.

UT Arlington cut their deficit down to one after a Camryn Hawkins made a 3-pointer with 6:55 left in the third.

Louisiana led 28-22 with 5:18 left in the third after Doucet converted an and-one opportunity.

The Mavericks regained the lead with 59 seconds left int the quarter. Hawkins hit another 3-pointer to give UT Arlington a 34-32 lead before Burton tied the game at 34 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Ragin’ Cajuns. They outscored UT Arlington 23-14. The Mavericks tied the game at 37 with 9:35 remaining int he game.

Louisiana’s Makayia Hallmon made a jumper to give the Ragin’ Cajuns a 39-37 lead with 8:05 remaining. Louisiana did not relinquish the lead from that point. The Ragin’ Cajuns sealed the game at the free throw line and kept their winning streak alive with another Sun Belt win.

Big Number: 31

The Ragin’ Cajuns defense held UT Arlington to shoot only 31 percent from the field. The Mavericks shot 16-of-52 from the field. Louisiana’s defense also forced 20 turnovers in the win.

Player of the Game: Ty Doucet

While Louisiana’s defense held UT Arlington to under 50 points, Doucet led the way for the Ragin’ Cajuns offense. She scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Doucet added eight rebounds in 34 minutes.
