The New Orleans Saints salary cap situation got a little bit more complicated moments before the franchise tag deadline.

The club is placing the franchise tender on safety Marcus Williams according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Another surprise: The #Saints are putting the franchise on S Marcus Williams, source said.

The salary cap is not officially set, so figures aren’t finalized, but the franchise tag for safeties is estimated at around $10.5 million.

The move means that the front office will have to keep working on getting under the salary cap before they find out what the numbers will be. The Saints are projected to be roughly $58 million above the salary cap projections, per Over The Cap.

The former second-round pick is coming off of a 2020 season that saw him rack up three interceptions and 59 total tackles in 14 games played.
