Bijan Robinson for Heisman
The Red River Shootout is always filled with drama and intrigue and this one had it in spades. That said, I’m not even going to talk about the actual contest – I want to talk about a Heisman candidate in Bijan Robinson. He put on one hell of a performance in a losing effort, but I saw some runs that made me and a lot of other members of the media take notice at just how good he is.
He was a preseason All-American for a reason, and if he keeps putting on great performances the rest of the way, there’s every reason to believe that he’ll be getting an invite to the Downtown Athletic Club before too long.
Texas A&M Partying Like It’s 2012
I wondered aloud on Sunday night which fanbase between Texas A&M and the Dallas Cowboys was going to more insufferable after this weekend and after much thought, Texas A&M is more insufferable than Dallas Cowboys fans. Eventually, the Cowboys will falter and their fans will be salty once again.
Aggie nation has been partying like it’s 2012 after their upset victory over Alabama and they’re probably going to put that up on the rafters at Kyle Field and boast about it till the cows come home. Don’t forget that this team lost to Arkansas and Mississippi State (have fun with a ticked off Nick Saban this weekend Bulldog nation).
Hawkeyes Best Nittany Lions
I’m always a sucker for chaos in college football and seeing the Iowa Hawkeyes ranked second in the country is something I never expected to see in any season, let alone in 2021 but here we are. What makes it even better is how they’ve done this – we’re not seeing a high-powered offense.
Instead we’re seeing the Hawkeyes dominate opponents with their defense from opening kickoff to the final gun. I keep saying it on this column, but it’s now time if you haven’t already to talk to your kids about an undefeated Iowa team before it’s too late.
Georgia Steamrolls Auburn
The Georgia Bulldogs are better than you and they know it. From the second I looked at the weekend lines, I knew for a fact that Georgia was going to boat race Auburn. This team is markedly better than an Auburn team that has Bo Nix who fluctuates like the stock market depending what week it is.
I’ve been blown away as to how they’ve been running past everyone with the only real challenge being the week one defensive struggle against Clemson. The road doesn’t get any easier with the next two games being an undefeated Kentucky team and a solid Florida team, so there’s a chance chaos could once again reign supreme in the SEC.
Aaron Donald: Finger Collector
Usually this column focuses on the weekend action, I couldn’t let another minute go by without mentioning the conspiracy theory of Aaron Donald collecting fingers. First Drew Brees, now Russell Wilson – who will be the next to get trapped in the maw that is the Los Angeles Rams defensive line and more importantly the helmet of Aaron Donald.
Kickers Suck
If you were a kicker in the NFL, you learned that there’s nothing but pain at that position. First you have Cody Parkey, king of the double doink missing field goals (when’s Wil Lutz coming back? Asking for a friend). That was then followed up by the field goal shootout between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Green Bay Packers that might have aged Mason Crosby ten years based off the salt and pepper look he had when he took his helmet.
In other words, kickers just are struggling for one reason or another and it’s painful to watch.
Tom Brady Is Iron Man
I talked about fingers earlier and somehow Tom Brady had an injured thumb and still threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns in a big win over the Miami Dolphins. At this point, it’s sickening to think that Tom Brady can still be the most dominant quarterback in the history of the league with an injury like that.
He’s 44 years old and defying every single metric that the NFL has set over the years and I hate it.
Jaguars Need to Be Relegated
20 straight losses for the Jacksonville Jaguars and there’s seemingly no end in sight. Trevor Lawrence probably didn’t expect his NFL career to start off this horribly. Here’s the thing it’s not all on him – a good bit of that is because of the three-ring circus around the franchise that is Urban Meyer.
It was fun while it lasted, but it’s now time to cut Meyer lose before he starts citing heart issues as to why he’s stepping down from the head coaching position before sliding into the same job at USC. If there was relegation like in the Premier League, they’d be going straight down to the bottom barrel.
