PREP PROFILE Q&A: Acadiana WR Russell Babineaux

Posted by jamesmeche on September 14, 2023 in Blogs, Featured, High School Sports, James's Blog, Latest News, Local News, Sports News, What's Hot, What's New

Acadiana High Wreckin’ Rams wide receiver Russell Babineaux helped ground and pound Sulphur in a unique way last Friday.

Babineaux and the Rams’ offense continued to put points on the board as they bounced back from a crushing defeat to the Lafayette Christian Academy Knights. Last Friday, Acadiana got their first win of the season as they took down district foe Sulphur 35-7.

The junior wide receiver moved to quarterback with their starter Caden Diabetta being unavailable. The Wreckin’ Rams offense didn’t miss a beat, however, as Babineaux led Acadiana’s veer offense with 88 yards rushing and a touchdown. The four-star recruit according to On3.com also added 110 yards passing and a touchdown in the team’s victory.

Question: What was the feeling like going into last Friday’s game knowing you needed to step up and play quarterback?

Answer: It felt good coming off the receiver position and going in to play quarterback and be able to help the team in any way I can. It also felt good being able to lead the team and actually get the offense going. I liked how everything was going with the flow.

Q: What were practices like that week as you prepared to take on the Sulphur Golden Tors?

A: Just preparing, getting our mindsets right, and the play-calling. All throughout the week, we worked on the plays that we were going to run to execute in the game on Friday. Preparing like that was really fun, just being able to get everything done. I’ve been around all of this for so long that everything comes naturally in the back of my head.

Q: Can you describe or explain how the recruiting process has been for you and the impact that it’s had on your family?

A: It’s been fun during the recruiting process. Everything has been going up, being able to be in that position for my family. It’s an exciting time for them and me at the same time and we’ve loved the process to this point.

Q: What aspects of your game help you play quarterback and wide receiver effectively?

A: I’ve just been letting the game come to me. I feel like when you’re back there, staying relaxed and calm, you can play any position that coaches need you. Just play relaxed at the position and let it come to you. Also, my overall aspects lean towards speed the most. Everyone knows that speed kills and I think that’s one of the main things that makes me effective when playing my position.

Q: What has been the preparation process for your matchup with NISH?

A: We’re still preparing the same way. If they need me at QB, I’ll play there but if they need me at wide receiver, I’m there too. I’m ready to play anything at this point, even if they want me out there to play a little at running back. Preparation has been there, we’re ready and we’re coming.

Acadiana will play at New Iberia Senior High. The pregame will be at 6:45 and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and you can listen to the action live on MeTV 97.7 FM and 1330 AM or on the free mobile app.
