Southside High School won’t have to travel for their home games much longer.

After a unanimous vote by the Lafayette Parish School System, the school will receive more than $3 million to build a new football stadium.

Jeremy Hildago, the District 9 school board member, told our news partner KADN News15 that the funding is from leftover funds and the year’s budget.

“Much of the funding for this project is coming from good decisions on other projects and saving money,” Hildago said. “If you’re looking at the front of school to your right or…I believe East…is gonna be where the stadium is gonna be. That’s the plan and location of the stadium but those conversations will get a lot deeper in a meeting tomorrow with the staff.”

The project will begin with a turf field, scoreboard, and lights as it will be done in multiple phases.

It’s still unclear if the Sharks will be able to play at their stadium for the 2024 season, but the process of it getting started is a step in the right direction. Work on Phase One is expected to be completed by September.
