With the 21st pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans select Yves Missi, center, Baylor.
Missi stands at 6’11”, weighs 230 lbs, and has a 7’2″ wingspan. The selection comes with the expectation that New Orleans will not bring center Jonas Valanciunas back for a fourth season with the team.
The former Baylor Bear spent just one season in college but played in 34 games (started 32). Missi’s 2023-24 season stats were 10.7 points on 61.4% shooting, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 23 minutes played per game as Baylor went 24-11 and was third in the Big 12.
Missi also recorded five double-doubles with the fifth coming in the Big 12 Championship semifinal against Iowa State where he finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks.
The 20-year-old racked up a couple of awards in his freshman season as he was a part of the 2023-24 All-Freshman team, Big 12 All-Defensive team, and was an honorable mention for the All-Big 12.
Missi’s strength is on the defensive side of the ball with his ability to block shots and secure rebounds on both ends of the floor due to his strong frame, long arms, and athleticism. His offensive game is limited and needs development but will be a lob threat for the Pelicans as he finds a role with the team.
Born in Belgium but spent most of his childhood in Cameroon, Missi moved to the United States in 2021. He attended West Nottingham Academy in Maryland and then transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa, California.
