The New Orleans Saints have added another piece on defense.

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday that the team had agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defensive end Chris Rumph II on a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-2, 244-pound Rumph was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.

In four regular seasons with the Chargers, Rumph has appeared in 37 games, recording 29 tackles (17 solo), three sacks, four stops for a loss, one pass breakup, and one fumble recovery. He also appeared in the 2022 Wild Card Playoff against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rumph spent the entire 2024 season on Injured Reserve due to a foot injury.

Rumph was a star player in college for the Duke Blue Devils. He appeared in 36 games with 12 starts, recording 125 tackles (71 solo), 17.5 sacks, 34 stops for a loss, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. During his junior season in 2019, he was selected as a first-team All-American by Pro Football Focus and earned second-team All-American honors from Sports Illustrated.

Rumph’s signing with the Saints is a reunion between him and the Saints’ new defensive coordinator, Brandon Staley, who was hired this offseason by new head coach Kellen Moore. During his first three seasons with the Chargers, Rumph played under Staley, who was the head coach during that time.
