The 2025 U.S. Open from Oakmont Country Club is at the halfway point, and former LSU Tiger Sam Burns sits atop the leaderboard at -3.
The second round was officially halted in the late stages due to dangerous weather. However, no one has enough holes left to influence the top five.
Burns fired a first-round +2 72, but Friday was his day. He shot the low round in the field, a -5 65 to get his two-day total to -3. He made birdies at holes no. 17 and 18 on the way in to put himself just one shot back at the time.
Burns was one shot shy of J.J. Spaun, who started his second round as the solo leader at -4. Spaun did not have as much success on Friday, struggling through a round of +2 72 that included four bogeys in his final nine holes. Still, the score of -2 was good enough for solo second place after 36 holes.
As a matter of fact, just a trio of players were in the red numbers after two rounds. Viktor Hovland was the third, entering the weekend at -1.
For some of the biggest favorites, Oakmont showed its teeth.
World number one Scottie Scheffler shot 71 on Friday, putting him at +4 overall. That has him in Tied for 23rd.
Winner of the Grand Slam this year, Rory McIlroy sits at +6 and Tied for 44th.
Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau shot 77 on Friday, finishing the first two rounds +10 and missing the cut. Other notables to miss the cut included Shane Lowry (+17), Justin Thomas (+12), Dustin Johnson (+10), and Phil Mickelson (+8).
