The LSU Tigers have made their annual selection for the prestigious number 18 jersey, and for the first time in more than 20 years, a quarterback will receive the honors in 2025.
Garrett Nussmeier will wear the number 18 jersey this fall, LSU announced over the weekend. It marks the first time since Matt Mauck wore it in 2003 that a signal-caller will represent it.
The number 18 has been annually given to an LSU football player that exhibits leadership and commitment to the program.
Nussmeier took over the starting role in 2024, passing for 4,052 yards with 29 touchdowns and leading LSU to a 9-4 record. He led the offense to scoring more than 30 points per game in his first season at the helm.
Going into his second season as the starter, Nussmeier has been mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate. Additionally, he returns after throwing for 4,000 yards in a season, becoming only the fourth ever SEC quarterback to come back after such a season.
LSU opens the 2025 season on Saturday night against the Clemson Tigers in a top-10 showdown at 7:00 PM. You can listen to that game and every Tigers’ football game this season on ESPN 103.7 Lafayette 104.1 Lake Charles.
