The 90th Masters Tournament wrapped up at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia on Sunday evening. Rory McIlroy claimed the green jacket for the second consecutive year, holding on to win the tournament.
The day began with McIlroy tied with Cameron Young, but a host of players right behind them and in the mix. McIlroy began Saturday’s third round with a six shot lead, but saw it evaporate after he struggled.
Early in the day, players like Scottie Scheffler began to make their charge. Along with Scheffler, Russell Henley and Justin Rose also moved into the top five and created opportunities for themselves.
Early in McIlroy’s round, he struggled again. He played the first six holes at +2, and allowed Young to take the solo lead.
As the leaders neared the halfway point, Rose made his move. He birdied three straight, taking a two-shot lead at one point by getting all the way to -12.
That lead would not last, as Rose stumbled back to -10. McIlroy used a couple of birdies, including a huge one on the Par 3 12th hole during the famous “Amen Corner” stretch of the course. That regained him the lead as he got back to -12.
The chasing pack had moments, but no one was able to clearly surge towards Rory. Scheffler was able to get into the clubhouse at -11 with McIlroy sitting at -13 and two holes left to play.
Despite getting into some trouble on #18 after a wayward tee shot, McIlroy was able to close out the win with a bogey, winning The Masters with a score of -12. Scheffler finished second at -11, with Rose, Young, Henley, and Tyrell Hatton tied for third at -10.
