A pair of University of Louisiana student-athletes were recognized for their performances this weekend.
Ragin’ Cajun running back Elijah Mitchell and punter Rhys Byrns earned Sun Belt Conference honors after Louisiana’s 34-31 overtime road win.
Mitchell was named Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 164 yards on 16 carries. He also recorded two touchdowns, including the game-winning rushing touchdown in overtime.
Byrns was named Special Teams Player of the Week. The Ragin’ Cajuns punter matched a career-high for punts in a single game with seven. Byrns recorded 315 total punting yards for an average of 45 yards per punt.
Byrns pinned Georgia State inside the the 20-yard line three times.
This is Mitchell’s third time winning Offensive Player of the Week and Bryns’ second time earning Special Teams Player of the Week in the Sun Belt.
Louisiana remained No. 19 in the AP Top 25 Poll after their road wins against Iowa State and Georgia State.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will play their home-opener this Saturday against Georgia Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN2.
