Ragin’ Cajuns’ Chris Smith was named the Sun Belt Special Team’s Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. The Redshirt sophomore return specialist recorded 137 kickoff return yards in a 20-18 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars.
The Louisville, Mississippi native had a big performance as a returner against South Alabama after he brought back four kickoffs for 137 yards, including an 87 yard return to open the game. That opening return set up his rushing touchdown 58 seconds into the game.
Smith finished with a game-high 177 all-purpose yards after 40 yards were added on the ground. With this performance, Smith joined Ohio’s De’Montre Tuggle as the only two players in the country this season who have rushed for more than 40 yards and recorded more than 130 kickoff return yards in the same game.
