With Wednesday’s midday 80-48 victory over McNeese State, the University of Louisiana women’s basketball team picked up their first win of the season.
How It Happened:
UL took control from tipoff as the Ragin’ Cajuns grabbed the jumpball and Ty’reona Doucet made a quick layup. After a defensive rebound by Skyler Goodwin, Jomyra Mathis was fouled while making a layup and then made the ensuing free throw attempt to give the Ragin’ Cajuns a quick 5-0 lead.
McNeese State scored its first bucket with a Mychala Linzy jumper but UL answered with a Doucet jumper. McNeese then cut it back down to a three-point game with a layup by Divine Tanks.
From that point forward, scoring would be something tough to come by for the Cowgirls.
McNeese State shot a mere 15 percent from the field in the first half, had nine of its 15 points come from the free throw line, and committed 12 turnovers.
With 5:48 left in the opening quarter, Goodwin made a three-pointer and the Ragin’ Cajuns closed out the period outscoring the Cowgirls 21-1.
McNeese State kept pace with UL in the second period, only being outscored 12-11, but the Cowgirls could never cut into the Ragin’ Cajuns lead. UL held a comfortable 40-15 lead at the break.
The second half was more of the same as the Ragin’ Cajuns played a total of 13 players in the game, on their way to a comfortable 32-point victory.
