Ragin’ Cajuns freshman running back Montrell Johnson’s name was added to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Watch List earlier in the week.
Johnson is one of 37 candidates who have been named and is the only Sun Belt Conference player to be recognized. He is only one of six running backs honored as well.
The New Orleans native has been outstanding this season, rushing for 606 yards on 102 attempts and has a team high nine rushing touchdowns. Johnson has three multiple touchdown games this year and recorded two 100-yard rushing performances.
The freshman back is one of three Cajuns rookies since 2000 to score at least nine touchdowns in their first year with the program, joining Trey Ragas with nine and Tyrell Fenroy with 12.
