Two weeks into the 2017 season and the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (1-1) got caught up in the middle of a track meet in both games. The Cajuns kept it competitive until the final quarter when the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-1) put up 21 points to officially put the game out of reach, winning 66-42.
After both teams settled for field goals on their respective opening drives, the real fun began when D’Angelo Brewer found the endzone with a 50-yard run to take a 10-3 lead. Jordan Davis helped lead the Cajuns down the field on a 10-play drive that ended with a one-yard run from the junior to tie it up with a little more than a minute and a half left in the first quarter.
Chad President gave Tulsa the lead back early in the second quarter with a short run of his own to cap off a 15-play drive that took almost five minutes off the clock. Elijah Mitchell continued the track meet after finding the endzone after a twenty-yard run.
Tulsa struck again with a six-play drive that took only 1:20 off the clock and was capped off by a four-yard run to take the lead once again. The Cajuns did come close to tying it late in the first half after Davis connected with Keenan Barnes on a 15-yard pass, but a missed extra point from Stevie Artigue kept the Cajuns one point down.
The Golden Hurricane ended the first half with a pair of touchdowns in the final two minutes to make it 38-23 as both teams headed to the locker room. It seemed like Tulsa had finally gained an edge, but the Cajuns fired back to open the second half with a pair of touchdowns from Mitchell and Davis. However, the Cajuns missed out on three points after a failed two-point conversion and another missed extra point, this time from Calvin Linden.
That was as close as the Cajuns would get as it was all Tulsa with the exception of a 15-yard touchdown from Trey Ragas in the fourth quarter.
The Cajuns will next take on the Texas A&M Aggies (1-1) on Saturday in College Station with kickoff set for 11 am.
Extra Points:
Brewer Sets Career-High: Tulsa put up some big numbers on Saturday, but none bigger than D’Angelo Brewer. The senior running back racked up 262 of Tulsa’s 424 rushing yards and three scores on the evening. This eclipsed his previous high of 252 from last season against Fresno State.
