Michael Desormeaux has officially named his guy.
Chandler Fields has been named the starting quarterback for the Ragin Cajuns, beating out Ben Wooldridge in one of the closest quarterback races that Cajun fans have seen in a while. The New Orleans native will finally get his opportunity to lead Louisiana’s offense after being mentored by Levi Lewis.
“Chandler Fields is going to be our starting quarterback because he gives us the best chance to go out there, win, and play really good football for us this year” said Desormeaux Monday at media availability.
Fields was very successful in high school at Archbishop Rummel in New Orleans, where he led the Raiders to a 9-3 record his senior year. He was rated as a three-star recruit and the #47 prospect in the state of Louisiana. His junior year had stats of 2,359 passing yards and 30 touchdowns at Rummel.
Fields has been behind Lewis in his Cajun career, but still appeared in eight games last year, going 9-13 for 106 yards and a touchdown on the year. He will look to be a threat in this offense with his ability to move the ball down the field.
“Chandler just makes plays down the field, pushes the ball down the field well. You play quarterback to win the game, you don’t play to not lose the game and he’s certainly got that mentality” Desormeaux said to media. “He’s done a really good job running and operating this offense.”
Fields will lead the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns into the 2022 season on September 3rd when they host Southeastern Louisiana at Cajun Field. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
