District play has begun across most of the districts in Acadiana. This portion of the schedule will give us a much better idea of how strong some of the contenders are across classifications. It also gives us a chance to compare teams more closely to the type of teams that they will see in the playoffs, now that most teams are playing in their own classifications.
Week six saw some interesting developments across various districts in the area. Here are my five takeaways.
- Vermilion Catholic’s path to perfect season becoming more clear: After the Eagles’ incredible run last season, it was fair to think they may take a step back this season. We spoke about their chances a couple of weeks ago and mentioned how they were not as dominant as last year. However, Broc Prejean’s group is 6-0 and rolling again and starting to look like that dominant version of themselves. Showdowns with Jeanerette and Central Catholic will test them, but VC has a chance to run the table once more.
- Cecilia’s offense is unstoppable: Cecilia is 5-1 and their only loss came in a wild 49-46 shootout against Southside. Led by Diesel Solari, the Bulldogs have scored at least 35 points in every game and have scored more than 40 in all but one. Their game against Opelousas High is likely to have district title implications.
- St. Edmund and Opelousas Catholic collision course continues: The two 1A programs met last year and Opelousas Catholic blew them out twice in a row. This year’s St. Edmund team seems much improved, and OC is putting things together as well. Those two once again meet in the final game of the season.
- Ascension Episcopal with a path in 8-2A: The Blue Gators are 4-2 and came up with a huge win over Catholic of New Iberia last week. That avenges a loss from last year and sets up a definite path for Ascension Episcopal to win the district.
- Acadiana set for massive test this week: The Wreckin’ Rams have not lost since week one to LCA and none of them have been close. This week, they face perennial power John Curtis in a huge test. We will know a lot more about this Acadiana team at this time next week.
