We are getting into the thick of the district portion of most teams’ schedules in Acadiana area high school football. The district pictures are becoming clearer, with plenty still left to determine in the next few weeks. Teams are also jockeying for playoff berths and seeding.
Week seven saw changes in the structure of some of the battles across various districts in the area. Here are my five takeaways.
- Acadiana needs to regroup and reset: The Wreckin’ Rams had been rolling for a long stretch before their trip to New Orleans last week. They were defeated 28-0 by John Curtis on the road. Curtis is one of the best programs in the history of the state, so things are not over for Acadiana, but they have to have a short memory. They face Southside in a huge district road game this week.
- LCA is who we thought they were: The Knights have scored at least 49 points in all but one game this season, that being their loss to Ruston. Last Thursday, they made a statement by demolishing Teurlings Catholic 62-3 in a game that sent shockwaves around the area. All things point to their matchup against STM deciding that district in the last week of the regular season.
- District 5-4A will be decided on Friday: Opelousas High and Cecilia have been on a collision course for a while. A couple of weeks into district play, it has become fairly apparent that the winner of this game will take home the title. Last year, Opelousas High won a close one. We will see if history repeats itself.
- Kaplan keeps finding a way: The Pirates won another close game last week, this time in a 16-13 win over Erath. They are now 6-1 and have won in a variety of different situations. This week they face a 2-5 St. Martinville team, but the Tigers have played an incredibly difficult schedule and will provide a big challenge.
- Carencro with one more test before Acadiana showdown: The Bears face Sam Houston, who is certainly formidable at 6-1 overall. If Carencro gets by them, it sets up their big matchup with Acadiana, who is also undefeated in district play.
