It may be hard to believe, but the high school football regular season is already halfway complete. Most teams have finished or are very close to finishing the non-district portion of the calendar, meaning every game starts to get more important from here on out.
Week five saw some exciting performances. Here are my five takeaways.
- Lafayette High is headed in the right direction: The Mighty Lions went on the road in week five to St. Martinville and won a 56-29 shootout. Ke’vonte Landry was responsible for eight touchdowns and the offense executed extremely well. Having the Lions at 3-2 halfway through the season is a great step for first-year head coach Garrett Kreamer.
- St. Edmund can challenge Opelousas Catholic: Last year with an extremely young team, St. Edmund lost to the Vikings to close the regular season and again in the first round of the playoffs. This year’s team is more experienced and has one of the leading rushers in the state with Ke’von Johnson. Week five saw them avenge one of last year’s losses by beating Oakdale. That week ten matchup with OC is going to be much more intriguing this time around.
- Notre Dame ready to turn focus to district: It has been a tough first half for the Pios. They have dealt with injuries and now have lost back-to-back games and three of their first five overall. However, they get a chance to start with a clean slate in district this week. A tough 4-1 Lake Arthur team will be the first test.
- Teurlings begins brutal three-week district stretch: Coach Dane Charpentier has spoken about injuries affecting his team this season. However, the Rebels have found their way to a 4-1 record. With that being said, their season may get defined in the three-week stretch that begins on Friday, where they face Westgate, LCA, and STM all in order.
- Abbeville looks to carry the momentum of a great start: For the second straight season, Abbeville has started 4-1. Last year, they lost three of their next four after that point. This year’s team will look to change that, and it begins with a matchup against 5-0 perennial power St. Charles Catholic.
