Week three in high school football in the Acadiana area was as intriguing as any. A couple of area powerhouses flexed on Catholic League opponents. Other teams continued to roll and set up some big-time week four matchups.
Here are my five takeaways from the third week of action.
- STM may be even better than we thought: Last week’s Prep Five mentioned that the Cougars were certainly formidable, but that a test against a Catholic League opponent would tell us more. A 41-7 thrashing of one of New Orleans’ traditional powers in Brother Martin seems to have told us all we needed to know. This year’s STM team is dangerous and can control things on both sides of the ball.
- LCA can challenge STM: Not only did STM make a statement against a Catholic League foe, but LCA did so as well. Jujuan Johnson may be the most electrifying player in the state, and a 51-18 commanding victory over Jesuit certainly puts LCA in the same conversation as STM. Those two were already #1 and #2 in the 4A poll, and that should not change any time soon.
- Kaplan is gaining momentum: A strong start to the season saw Kaplan upend North Vermilion 18-14 in week one. A comfortable win over Berwick and now another dominant performance against LaGrange have the Pirates rolling through three weeks at 3-0. They were just 1-2 at this point last year, and a matchup with 4A Rayne should give us another measure of how good this iteration of Kaplan is.
- Northwest and Eunice clash will be revealing: After a slow start and a surprising loss to Northside, Coach Chris Edwards’ team bounced back with two dominant wins against both Crowley and Beau Chene. Their defensive line is legitimate, and if they get enough offense, they will be tough to beat. Eunice is 2-1 as well after a thriller against Church Point. Their running game gets a big test going against that Northwest front on Friday.
- Carencro steals one and stays unbeaten: Southside had the lead and the ball on Thursday night, trying to close out a big win over Carencro. However, the Bears had other ideas. They forced a fumble and then were able to put it in the end zone to steal a big win and get to 3-0. That win could keep the Bears rolling as the young season continues.
