It may be hard to believe, but there are only two weeks left in the 2023 prep football regular season. There are plenty of playoff contenders in the area, and many of them are looking to secure district titles, gain playoff positioning, and start putting everything together at the right time of the year.
Week eight saw several surprising results along with some impressive statement wins. Here are my five takeaways.
- Teurlings is not done, but STM is battle-tested: After Teurlings was dismantled 62-3 last week by LCA, many cast them aside. However, they responded and played very well, holding a two-score lead late against top-ranked STM. However, the Cougars put together an impressive comeback to stay unbeaten and remain the favorites in their classification.
- LCA ready for big clash: The Knights were theoretically going to be tested by Westgate last week. However, they handled them, winning by over 30 points. They face North Vermilion this week before next week’s showdown against the aforementioned STM Cougars. That could be the game of the year and also could be a preview of a big-time postseason rematch.
- Cecilia prevailed in classic: Cecilia’s high-powered offense was slowed down for much of their contest against Opelousas High. However, the Bulldogs figured things out and put together a comeback victory. That puts them in the driver’s seat for the district, and they will certainly be a tough out in the playoffs.
- Acadiana, Carencro face off after big wins: After Acadiana beat Southside and Carencro defeated Sam Houston, both teams are heading into this game playing well. This is a big test for the Carencro defense, as the high-flying Wreckin’ Ram offense will look to keep putting up big numbers.
- Notre Dame reaping benefits of difficult schedule: The Pioneers struggled through a gauntlet during the non-district portion of the schedule. However, they are turning it on now and will face an interesting test when they play Welsh next week.
