Ex-UL Running Back McGuire is Signed to Browns Practice Squad

Elijah McGuire has found a new NFL home.

A mere three days after the New York Jets released McGuire, the former University of Louisiana star running back was signed by the Cleveland Browns. Browns Wire broke the news that McGuire had been added to the Browns’ 10-man practice squad. McGuire is still eligible to play on an NFL team’s practice squad because this his third season in the league. 

The Browns currently have three running backs on the 53-man roster including Nick Chubb, Dontrell Hilliard and D’Ernest Johnson. Former Kansas City star Kareem Hunt begins the season on the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner list for a domestic violence issue but Hunt is also recovering from having sports hernia surgery. 

Before being cut by the Jets last week, McGuire had 30 carries for 77 yards and zero touchdowns in four preseason games. McGuire also had 13 receptions for 88 yards and one touchdown. McGuire’s 13th catches was the tied for the ninth most this past preseason.

The 5-foot-10, 214-pound McGuire is entering his third season in the NFL after being drafted in the sixth round in the 2017 draft by the Jets. In his first two seasons, McGuire has 180 carries for 591 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns, while also adding 36 receptions for 370 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns.

McGuire had a record-setting career with the Ragin’ Cajuns as he rushed for 4,301 yards and 42 touchdowns while catching 130 passes for 1,394 yards and 10 touchdowns and was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year (2014). 

Prior to signing with UL, McGuire was an all-state running back at Vandebilt Catholic as he led the state as a senior with 2,603 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns.
