Dylan Crews added another first on Wednesday night.
After making his Major League Baseball debut on Monday and recording his first hit on Tuesday, the former LSU star and Washington Nationals rookie hit his first home run on Wednesday night. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft blasted a home run off of New York Yankees’ Carlos Rodon in the first inning a 5-2 victory.
In his debut on Monday, the 2023 Golden Spikes Award winner went 0-for-3 with a walk. In his second game, Crews went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base off and a double off of 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole.
Then came Wednesday night, when Crews hit his first home run which traveled 399 feet at Nationals Park.
Crews batting in the leadoff spot took ball one and then saw a 93 miles per hour fastball on the inside which he promptly sent into the visitors bullpen in left field.
Later in the game, Crews would record his second double and pick up his second RBI en route to a victory over the Yankees.
Crews became the first player to win SEC Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons and just the second LSU player to win the Golden Spikes Award. He finished the 2023 national championship season hitting .426 with 110 hits (2nd in the nation), 100 runs (best in the nation), 71 walks (1st), and an on-base percentage of .567 (2nd).
Crews also reached base safely in each of the 71 games played in 2023, extending his streak to 75 games. While in Omaha for the College World Series, he hit .375 with a double, triple, homer, three RBIs, and 11 runs scored.
Crews and the Nationals will have an off day Thursday before they host the Chicago Cubs this Friday.
