Jonathan Lucroy has found a new big league team.
The former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun star catcher signed a minor league contract on Tuesday with the Philadelphia Phillies shortly after being released by the Boston Red Sox. The Phillies are the eighth Major League Baseball team the former Ragin’ Cajun great has signed with.
Jim Salisbury of NBCSports Philadelphia reported the news Tuesday that Lucroy was officially signed to a minor league contract and was added to the team’s alternate site at Lehigh Valley.
Lucroy is eligible to play in the postseason because he was a member of the team’s 60-man player pool on the final day of eligibility.
The 34-year-old Lucroy was signed by the Boston Red Sox to a minor league deal in February and made the team’s opening day roster. Lucroy though appeared in one game for the Red Sox before being sent to the team’s alternate site for the rest of the season.
Lucroy played for the Ragin’ Cajuns from 2005-07 and earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors twice (2005, 2007), named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team (2006) and named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American (2005).
Lucroy was selected in the third round of the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. In his career, Lucroy has played for eight teams: Brewers, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Oakland’s A’s, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, Red Sox and now Phillies.
Lucroy has played in 1,203 games, recorded 1,128 hits, scored 481 runs, 108 homer runs, 545 RBI and has a .274 batting average. Lucroy also was named a National League All-Star in 2014 and 2016.
