Ex-Louisiana Collegiate Stars Shine in NFL Preseason Openers

The NFL kicked off the 2019 preseason slate of games on Thursday and there were several former Louisiana collegiate stars that made plays for the respective teams. Here is a look at those players who made an impact during the first week of the preseason.

Elijah McGuire, RB, New York Jets, University of Louisiana

In a 31–22 defeat to the N.Y. Giants, the former Ragin’ Cajuns star displayed his versatility as McGuire had six carries for 13 yards, while also hauling in six receptions for 38 yards including a 7-yard touchdown from Trevor Siemian. 

Nick Brossette, RB, New England Patriots, LSU

The former Tiger 1,000-yard rusher led all rushers with 66 yards on 22 carries in the Patriots’ 31-3 victory over the Detroit Lions. Brossette also scored a 1-yard touchdown and caught the ensuing two-point conversion pass. 

Jazz Ferguson, WR, Seattle Seahawks, LSU & NSU

The Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year caught four passes for a game-high 54 yards as the Seattle defeated Denver 22-14. Ferguson also caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Paxton Lynch in the third quarter.

Greedy Williams, CB, Cleveland Browns, LSU

The former Tiger All-American recorded two solo tackles and pulled in an interception in the 30-10 win over the Washington Redskins.

Trey Quinn, WR, Washington Redskins, LSU & SMU

The second-year wide receiver and former Barbe High star recorded one reception for 8 yards in a 30-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns. 

Jaylon Ferguson, OLB, Baltimore Ravens, Louisiana Tech

The NCAA’s career sack leader and former Bulldog defensive star recorded one tackle in his preseason debut as Baltimore rolled Jacksonville 29-0. 

Alfred Blue, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars, LSU

The veteran running back was second on his team with 20 yards rushing on 5 carries while also hauling in 1 pass for 1 yards in a 29-0 loss to Baltimore. 

D.J. Chark, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars, LSU

The second-year wide receiver and former Tiger star was targeted three times and recorded one reception for 2 yards in a 29-0 loss to Baltimore. 

Danny Etling, WR, New England Patriots, LSU

The quarterback-turned-wide receiver had zero receptions and was targeted once in the Patriots’ 31-3 win over the Detroit Lions.

Diontae Spencer, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers, McNeese State

The former Cowboys star and CFL standout pulled in 2 passes for 17 yards in Friday night’s 30-28 win over Tampa Bay. Spencer also returned 4 punts for 52 yards and had 1 kickoff return for 35 yards.

Devin White, LB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, LSU

The Dick Butkus Award winner and first-round draft pick recorded one tackle in Tampa Bay’s 30-28 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night.

Cyril Grayson Jr., WR, New Orleans Saints, LSU

The former Tiger track and field star hauled in 2 passes for 32 yards while having returning 2 kick backs for 61 yards in the 34-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night.

Travin Dural, WR, New Orleans Saints, LSU

The former LSU and Breaux Bridge star did not record a reception but was targeted once in the Saints’ 34-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Friday.
