The reigning Heisman Trophy winner is headed to Philadelphia.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver and Amite native Devonta Smith was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 10 overall pick in Thursday’s NFL Draft. The Eagles traded up two spots with NFC East Division rival Dallas Cowboys to select Smith.
This past season, Smith became the first wide receiver to win college football’s most prestigious award since Michigan’s Desmond Howard accomplished the feat back in 1991.
The 6-foot, 170-pound Smith led the nation in receptions (117), receiving touchdowns (23) and receiving yards (1,856) to earn unanimous first-team All-American honors, the Biletnikoff Award and then the Heisman.
Smith also holds the Southeastern Conference and Alabama career records for receiving touchdowns (46) and receiving yards (3,965).
Smith capped his college career by earning Offensive MVP honors in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game recording 12 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns — all in the first half.
