LSU defensive coordinator Matt House was nominated for the Broyles Award, which goes to the top assistant coach in the country. Only 51 of the 1,500 assistant coaches throughout Division I football are nominated for the award. Also, quarterback Jaydon Daniels has been named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award and the Walter Camp Award, which goes to the top quarterback and top offensive player respectively.
The Broyles Award, created in 1996, was named after Frank Broyles and his legendary career at the University of Arkansas. The award is voted on by members of the Football Writers Association of America, broadcasters, a college football hall of fame committee, and current college head coaches.
During his first year in Baton Rouge, House has revitalized the LSU defense, returning only three starters from 2021 and making it on of the best in the conference. The Tigers are on a four-game winning streak, sitting at #6 in the College Football Playoff poll, and playing in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia in two weeks.
House’s defense has held Ole Miss scoreless for three quarters of a top matchup in Death Valley and held Alabama scoreless in the first half for the first time this year. They also limited Bama to nine points in the first three quarters, which was the fewest all season.
House has also molded superstar defensive players Harold Perkins Jr and Bj Ojulari into top talent in the league, with Perkins twice being named SEC Defensive Player of the Week as well as Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week. Ojulari has also been named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week twice under House.
Daniels has led LSU from an offensive standpoint to an 8-2 record and clinched the SEC West by beating Arkansas this past Saturday.
Daniels is the only player in the SEC to rank among the top 10 in the league in rushing and passing yards. He’s also only one of three quarterbacks nationally to rush for 600 yards while throwing for 2,000 yards and his 10 rushing touchdowns is tied for the most among quarterbacks in the FBS.
Through 10 games, Daniels has a 68.9% completion percentage with 14 touchdowns and only two interceptions. His 24 touchdowns accounted for ranks seventh in LSU history.
Daniels became the first LSU quarterback to rush for 100 yards and pass for 200 in a game that was decided in regulation. He has hit that mark on multiple occasions in 2022, first against Florida State and most recently against Ole Miss.
Daniels is also the first player in school history to rush for three touchdowns and pass for three touchdowns in a game decided in regulation.
Daniels earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks with wins over Ole Miss and Alabama.
