The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (3-5) didn’t get a hit until the sixth inning, but they were able to manufacture a pair of runs to come away with a 2-1 victory over Nicholls State (1-7) on Wednesday night.
The Cajuns got cooking in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a throwing error by Jacob Bedevian got Daniel Lahare to third base. Kennon Fontenot got them on the board with a sac fly out to center field.
Gavin Bourgeois gave them a little insurance in the seventh inning with an RBI single out to left field to score Zach LaFleur. It looked like the Colonels were about to fight back when Joey Morales grounded out to Logan Stoelke that scored Champ Davison. Stoelke was able to limit the damage from there despite having a runner in scoring position.
Colten Schmidt improved to 1-0 on the season, allowing five hits and striking out six in seven innings of work. Stoelke got his third save of the season, walking one and striking out one in one and two-thirds of an inning of work.
The Cajuns will head up to Houston to take part in the Shriner’s College Classic with the first game against Mississippi State with first pitch set for 7 pm.
