Sunday afternoon at Russo Park certainly didn’t end the way many wanted it to with the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (6-9) dropping the rubber match to Loyola Marymount (8-7) by the score of 7-3.
How It Happened:
The Lions came out of the gates strong with a two-out, two-run single by Tommy Delgado to give them the early lead. That lead ballooned in the top of the fifth when the bats really started to heat up with Cooper Uhl hitting a leadoff double down the left field line. Loyola Marymount capitalized on the early opportunity with an RBI single from Trevin Esquerra to make it 3-0.
Later in the inning, Ryan Ruley ripped a two-out double down the right-field line to put the Lions up 5-0. The runs just kept on coming in the sixth with a well-played sac bunt by Uhl getting Dylan Hirsch home safely followed up by an RBI double from Esquerra to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
The Cajuns would finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh off of an error by Ruley deep in left field, getting two runs across. However, that was all that the Cajuns could amass in that inning. Even a leadoff home run by Orynn Veillon wasn’t enough to get a late rally going with the next three batters striking out to give Loyola Marymount the series win.
Big Number: 13
The Lions bats just teed off on the pitching staff racking up 13 hits, five of which were doubles. It was impressive to see an offense that was kept in check on Friday, really start to find their groove the rest of the weekend.
Player of the Game: Trevin Esquerra
The sophomore out of San Diego, California was the star of the show in the series finale, going three-of-five including a pair of RBI doubles.
