Louisiana Takes Down Southern Miss to Split Midweek Series

Posted by clintdomingue on April 4, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (13-16) didn’t have a late collapse on Wednesday night and were able to come away with a 7-4 victory over Southern Miss (20-8) thanks to a strong start.

How It Happened

The Cajuns wasted no time getting things done, plating three runs highlighted by a two-run double from Zach LaFleur. Southern Miss was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second scoring off of a grounder from Casey Maack.

The wheels started to come off for the Golden Eagles when the Cajuns put together another three-run inning in the third. It looked like Southern Miss was going to rally back late for the second straight night, but Gavin Bourgeois sealed the deal in the eighth with bunt single to score Daniel Lahare.

Brett Williams got his first win of the season allowing two runs off of three hits, walked one and struck out three in two and two-thirds of an inning of work. Logan Stoelke got his seventh save of the season allowing one hit in the ninth.

Key to Victory: Great First Inning

This was another strong start for the Cajuns, getting three runs across in the first with two of them coming from a two-out double by LaFleur. You can also give some credit to another three-run inning in the third. Crooked numbers are huge when it comes to this team’s success.

Big Number: 13

Make it a baker’s dozen for freshman Hayden Cantrelle as he extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double, giving him his third extra base hit this week.

Player of the Game: Zach LaFleur

He was the spark that the Cajuns needed on Wednesday and helped the Cajuns earn a crooked number first inning with a two-run double.

Next Up: Returning home to take on UT-Arlington; Friday First Pitch at 6 pm
