LSU’s season will continue for at least one more day after Giovanni DiGiacomo capped off a wild game with a walk-off single to give the Tigers a 6-5 win to send Central Connecticut State home packing.
How It Happened:
Dylan Crews wasted zero time getting the Tigers on the board with a leadoff solo home run out to left field to take an early 1-0 lead. Cade Doughty followed that up with a single to left-center and Tre Morgan brought him home with a single that went to right-center field to make it a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Things went a little sideways in the top of the second though with Matt Bertochi drilling an RBI single to center field. That was followed up by a two-run double by Dan Covino to put the Blue Devils out in front with a 3-2 lead.
After Jay Devito grounded out, Noah Martinez launched a two-run shot to right field to make it a 5-2 ballgame.
LSU answered the bell though with another leadoff home run from Dylan Crews in the bottom of the third. Drew Bianco came up clutch later in the inning with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to knot things up at five runs apiece.
The game remained at a stalemate until the bottom of the tenth and Central Connecticut State quickly loaded the bases, giving Giovanni DiGiacomo a chance to play hero and extend the Tigers season in the process. He did just that with a single up the middle that got Gavin Dugas across home plate to stay alive in the NCAA Tournament
Big Number: 13
Sooner or later, LSU’s bats were going to get hot after going scoreless for 17 innings dating back to the Georgia game. The Tigers racked up 13 hits led by a big afternoon by Dylan Crews.
Player of the Game: Dylan Crews
Speaking of Crews, the freshman was on another level for the purple and gold going three-for-four with two bombs to help keep LSU in the ballgame.
