BATON ROUGE — A pair of Tigers have made the cut for two of college football’s most prestigious awards.

LSU’s record-setting quarterback Joe Burrow has been selected as one of the 20 semifinalists for the 83rd Maxwell Award which is given out to the Collegiate Player of the Year.

Burrow has produced some staggering offensive numbers as he leads the Southeastern Conference in total offense (366.2), passing yards per game (350.6), passing yards (2,805) and passing touchdowns (30). In eight games, Burrow has completed 205-of-260 passes for 2,805 yards, 30 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

Burrow has been named the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week four times this year and has helped lead the Tigers to an 8-0 record and a No. 1 national ranking.

LSU freshman cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. meanwhile has been selected as one of 20 semifinalists for the Bednarik Award which honors the Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year in college football.

Stingley, who is the only freshman to be selected, has recorded 22 tackles, to go along with his his Southeastern Conference-leading 13 passes defended and 4 interceptions.

LSU players have won the Bednarik Award twice before with Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu taking the honor in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011.

The winner of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show presented by Gildan which will be broadcast live on ESPN on Dec. 12, 2019.

Stevens Earns SEC Weekly Honors

LSU safety Jacoby Stevens was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.

The Tigers sophomore led the team with 10 tackles in last Saturday’s 23-20 win over then ninth-ranked Auburn. Stevens helped guide an LSU defense that held Auburn to 287 total yards, including just 130 on the ground.

Stevens is second on the team with 49 tackles, and also has 2.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and two interceptions.
