BATON ROUGE — The LSU Tigers are once again ranked in the college basketball polls.
LSU returned to the national polls on Monday for the first time since Week 2, as the Tigers came in ranked No. 22 in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll and selected No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
LSU enters Wednesday night’s game at home against Alabama having won eight straight contests including victories last week at home against Florida and on the road at Texas.
In the AP poll, LSU was ranked No. 22 in the preseason poll and No. 23 in the week 2 before falling out of the Top 25. LSU received votes the last two weeks before moving into the Top 25 on Monday.
LSU received 260 points from the 64-member voting panel and 74 points from the 32 head coaches that vote on the USA Today poll.
LSU (15-4, 6-0 SEC) host Alabama on Wednesday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Watford Earns Honors
LSU freshman Trendon Watford has been selected the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday.
The 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward from Birmingham, Ala., averaged 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block in victories over Florida at home and on the road at Texas. In the 84-82 win over the Gators, Watford scored 14 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and was 6-of-7 from the field. In the win over Texas, Watford scored a career-high 22 points and drained a pair of free throws late in the game to seal the win.
Alabama guard Kira Lewis Jr. and Kentucky forward Nick Richards meanwhile were selected as SEC Co-Players of the Week.
Cabrera Named All-American
LSU junior outfielder Daniel Cabrera was selected as 2020 First-Team Preseason All-American by Baseball America magazine.
Cabrera, who is switching from left field to right field this season, is a career .300 hitter with 30 doubles, 4 triples, 20 homers and 104 RBI. The Baton Rouge native will wear jersey No. 8 this season, the number that is given to the LSU upperclassman who best epitomizes leadership in the Tigers’ program.
Cabrera played in 59 games for LSU in 2019, batting .284 with 12 doubles, two triples, 12 homers, 50 RBI and 40 runs.
