The team that started it all is coming back home. LSU Eunice will honor its 2006 National Championship squad this Saturday, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the program’s first title.
The championship team will be recognized before the first pitch of LSUE’s doubleheader against rival Delgado on April 25, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. A special pregame ceremony will feature the team’s members being introduced on the field, along with a ceremonial first pitch.
Fans are encouraged to attend to celebrate the milestone with the group that helped put LSU Eunice baseball on the map. The 2006 squad was also inducted into the LSUE Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
That team finished the year 52-11 and battled through the elimination bracket at the NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, Tennessee. LSUE beat Grand Rapids Community College back-to-back in the finals to take home the program’s first title. Tournament MVP Brett Durand delivered a complete game shutout in game two to seal the title.
Since that breakthrough season, LSU Eunice has built a powerhouse program with 13 Regional Championships, 11 District Championships, 11 World Series appearances, and 8 National Championships, most recently adding another in 2024, all under legendary head coach Jeff Willis.
