LSU freshman right fielder Derek Curiel has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league offices on Monday.
Curiel was outstanding in his first career SEC series inside of Alex Box Stadium against Missouri. In a three-game sweep, Curiel hit .571 with three extra-base hits, four runs batted in, six runs scored, and a .647 on-base percentage. His bases-clearing triple on Friday reignited a comeback and led to the 12-5 victory for the Tigers.
The 2025 Preseason Freshman of the Year by D1Baseball, Curiel has lived up to the hype early on in Baton Rouge, hitting .451 for the season with 32 hits in 71 plate appearances. The West Covina, CA native has seven doubles, a pair of triples, and a home run to go along with 19 runs batted in and only 11 strikeouts.
Curiel will help lead the Tigers in a four-game week, starting with New Orleans on Tuesday night in the Box before a three-game SEC series on the road with #5 Texas. All the action can be heard on Southwest Louisiana’s Sports Station, ESPN 103.7 Lafayette and 104.1 Lake Charles.
